Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib's announcement of a massive economic empowerment agenda for bumiputra to thank them for their support for Barisan Nasional in the recent 13th general election has caused a storm in a tea-cup among certain quarters. If his intention is really to reward those who had supported the ruling coalition during the recent election, then why are Indians not included. Immediately after winning the mandate to govern for another five years, Datuk Seri Najib blamed the Chinese for Barisan Nasional's worst performance. He did not blame the Indians, implying that Indians supported BN. And if all Malays supported BN why did BN lose in Shah Alam and Gombak where the majority of the electorates are Malays. The truth is urban voters, whether Chinese, Malays or Indians, wanted to change the government because the incumbent government seemed unable to tackle the high crime rate, stop blatant corruption and improve the quality of education. Generally most of the people love the Prime Minister but not the party he is from. The Prime Minister has to do the bidding of the war lords in the party because they decide who helms the party.That is one of the reasons the government can never implement open tenders for all government contracts since the day Dr Mahathir introduced negotiated tenders. Was anyone surprised that Dr Mahathir could stay on as the Prime Minister for 22 years despite the numerous billion ringgit financial fiasco and scandal during his tenure ? Who cares about the future generations. What is important is to get elected in the next election.
The UMNO election will be held in October 2014 and the fate of the Prime Minister is the hands of 150 thousand members. Previously only 2000 delegates decide who will be the president of the party and prime minister of the country. How ridiculous !
